Day 8 – Shinobi Aru
I sit down thinking "What Object?". I see a cassette tape in my mind’s eye [lately I have been obsessing about them a lot]. "Extinction .. or almost!" I think aloud. A fabulous idea takes root and for the first time since I started doing these characters, I reach for my moleskin and start sketching. 10 minutes later, I take my sketch to Illustrator. Approximately 60 minutes later, Shinobi ARU is born. Shinobi means "Ninja" and Aru means "To Exist". The story goes like this ….. Ninja Aru has survived a great many crazy rewinds, tape entangles, heavy metal and even Backstreet Boys. He has now vowed to prevent the extinction of his kind and is secretly building an army of the last remaining few.
A touch of Japanese retro in colors and feel absolutely made my day as it came together. I scoured the web for the authentic kanji lettering for Shinobi Aru and did the calligraphy on my Wacom before grunging it up in Illustrator. It was a fun process through and through.
