10 Fantastic Movie Poster Tutorials

By Sneh Roy on Tuesday, 16 June 20099 Comments

I have a roundup of some snazzy tutorials that show you how to design a movie poster. While researching and googling for this list, I was a bit disappointed to find very little available out there on how to design good movie posters. Most tutorials don’t even follow the standard poster size which is a must for all movie posters. A lot of them just show plain effects but don’t educate on the combination of using the right typography to show off the proper genre of the movie in the poster. The ones I have here with the exception of the first one are all tutorials to make complete posters with graphics, effects and typography. The first one, although not a movie poster is a cool tutorial on how to achieve that retro effect if you were looking at making a retro movie poster.

Movie Posters have always been a love of mine – my walls have often been clad with them!! And working at the cinema when I was a student gave me great access to fresh new prints ;)

I imagine doing a design tutorial for posters like those created by the likes of Drew Struzan, John Alvin and Richard Amsel, would be a hard task! There’s no repliance on todays designs tools (the beloved computer) with that type of poster… just artistic talent!

One of my peers put a video together of some. If you’re interested it’s at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkwQW8I-o0o&feature=channel_page

This was a great diversion. I was thinking of doing a hannibal-type poster as a Christmas present. Thanks for gathering these together.

Thanks for great round-up of tutorials, and a special thank you for not just throwing together a bunch of effects instructions. There’s always so much more to creating a design than the visual style, and some of these do a good job of covering all the different elements.

Poster design is a wonderful artform and in many ways one of the most challenging types of design. To communicate so much in one layout that needs to work at such a range of scales and viewing distances is a big ask for any designer.

I do wish there was more written and discussed about the pure design considerations of the poster, in addtion to tutorials and galleries of examples, but I guess a close study of the work of Saul Bass and Milton Glaser can also suffice. :)
