15 Attention Grabbing Premium Slab Fonts That Are Absolutely Free

By Sneh Roy on Wednesday, 30 December 200920 Comments

A slab typeface is a serif typeface which is characterized by its bold, chunky, block-like qualities. It can be either angular or rounded around the extremities[edges]. A slab typeface is best used in attention grabbing posters, billboards, newspaper headlines and promotional materials. With big and bold typography becoming quite a trend on websites in the past couple of years, slab serif typefaces have exploded both on the free font scene as well as premium foundries. New slab fonts with various styles and versions are being released every single day, with foundries offering one or more weights of their more popular creations, absolutely free to whet the appetites of the typography addicts. Today, I have rounded up 15 attention grabbing premium quality slab fonts that you would probably pay for, but don’t have to because they are absolutely free. I quite like Nilland, akaChen and Typo Slab Serif. The unusual angles in Nilland, the beautiful curves in akaChen and the typewriter like qualities of Typo Slab Serif make them so unique and design-friendly.

Thanks for finding these potential gems. I actually fell back in love with slab serif fonts this year after about a year+ of avoiding them (no good reason why). In fact, I am using Typo Slab Serif in a project I am currently working on. There are definitely some great ones that I’ve never seen before. I’m thinking I need to find a reason soon to use Slab Tall X :) .

Nice collection of Slab fonts. Will be useful for future projects. My two favorite slab fonts are the ones that I purchased though.

    They are Rockwell and Archer.

These 2 fonts are amazing! But out of that list, I really like ChunkFive. I just downloaded it. Thanks for the great collection Sneh!

I would say these are attention grabbing fonts, although I don’t think I could work with all of them. I love finding new fonts online though, it’s become a pasttime for me :)

Thanks for the list, I’ll definitely be adding a few of these.

…on an unrelated note, may I ask why your comments are so big (the font, that is)? I don’t think it’s bad, just wondering what the thinking was behind the decision. :)
