Logo Hawk reporting for duty here on the Little Box Of Ideas Blog today. And she has an awesome roundup of branding and logo design news, resources and happenings from around the world for July 2009. There are some fantastic branding stories that caught the Hawk’s eye. Big companies are scrambling to rebrand, trying to outdo one another and in my honest opinion, totally missing the point of having a brand in the first place. One ingenius brand creator is reviving the old barter system and in turn increasing sales.

Nathan Rees Red Faced After Waratah Bungled In NSW Logo
The most poignant of all brand creation stories this month is the new logo for the state of NSW [New South Wales] in Australia. The state’s floral emblem, a Waratah was bungled and made into a lotus which was vehemently defended by the state’s Premier Nathan Rees. Oh what Shame! Designbay is running a rogue contest to rescue the NSW Government from this fiasco.
Melbourne’s New $240,000 Logo Unveiled
The city of Melbourne [yes, another branding story from down under] unveiled its modern, structural and hip logo this month which was developed at a whopping cost of $240,000. Sources say that $91,000 was spent on research. I wonder how many copies of the Logo Lounge Annuals did the firm buy with the research money because Melbourne’s new logo seems to have been built on Logo Designer Raja Sandhu’s Merchant Logix logo.
Banking Powerhouse ANZ Rolls Out New Global Logo
ANZ bank had a great logo. It was simple and it had energy. It looked fresh and modern, despite being old. Moreover, people related to it. But they had to go and do a "Pepsi" on it now, didn’t they? No, I haven’t had a bad day which is making me critique these rebrands unfavorably. They are just not up to the mark. The new ANZ logo is a lotus. Is it? You tell me! I see a man, I see a man even in the negative space. So there is man eating man … which is exactly what banks are doing. Maybe that was the creative process behind the logo when the designers developed it.
Will University Of Waterloo Logo Survive?
A very interesting post on the Brand New Blog about the recent rebrand of the University Of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada and the subsequent "Burn The Witch At The Stake" comments by the students via facebook. I for one actually quite like the logo. There is a youthful quality about it, it speaks to me of power, progress, technology, class and gumption.

Jenna Zilincar of M Studios is beating the recession by starting a barter system. She designs logo and creates brands in return for services the clients have to offer. In doing that, not only is she helping clients pressed for money start off somewhere, she has also managed to increase her sales. What a smart lady!

Back in April of 2006, I designed the Moonstonestreet Designs logo for my portfolio. It was inspired by the walls of Tadao Ando’s architecture. The “M” logo can also be a cantilevered beam.
The year’s 2010 and I absolutely didn’t expect myself to be scourging my files of 2006. But I did. Because just this lunch, I stumbled upon the logo design of the City of Melbourne at the The Cool Hunter’s website.
I knew it’s a perfect match the first time I saw it. But just to be sure, I edited it in Photoshop and put my own M logo on top. It is near-perfect identical.
