What Designers Really Want For Christmas 2009?
November 12, 2009 | Thoughts & Words By Sneh Roy | 28 Comments

This year I am quite prepared for Christmas. 2009 is going to be a stress free Christmas for me, I predict. Bring it on! My family has been asking me what I would like for Christmas and when I run through my mental checklist, I only find stuff related to design and cooking on that list [No wonder the two blogs I run are about design and food]. That got me thinking as to what other designers/developers would like for Christmas. So over the weekend I sent off a question to the design community in general. "What does your inner geek want for Christmas?". I was blown away by the fantastic response I received and also got a few great gift ideas to give and ask for in return.
There is a lot of Mac love going around
and font fetishes too.
Droids sneak into your hearts
iPhones are but few.
Santa’s got books in his big ol sack
and is that a Wacom I see?
I hope he brings you your heart’s wish
And sets your designer spirit free!
Now I promise you, I am not secretly working for Santa. But if you’ve been nice and not naughty, I might just leave this lying around so he can find it. I wonder what Santa’s factory for designers, geeks and gadget loving people looks like. Awesome, I reckon!
Here is what designers really want for Christmas 2009!
1. Grant Friedman | Colorburned
I’d like a17 inch MacBookPro with Matte Screen and a 27 inch iMac.
2. Von Glitschka | Glitschka Studios
I really have been wanting a "Green Lantern" t-shirt for Christmas. But I’d also settle for someone coming over and organizing all my fonts by style categories and making me reference binders as well.
3.Niki Brown | Design O’Blog
I’d most definitely like a shiny new humango 27in iMac
4. Jacob Gube | Six Revisions
My inner geek wants a PS3 Slim. I’d use it to play video games and watch Blu-ray movies.
5. Angie Bowen | Fuel Your Creativity
I would love to have an ipod touch. I don’t really have a need for an iphone but being an app addict, there are so many apps I would love to try out and an ipod touch would accomplish that for me.
6. Calvin Lee | Mayhem Studios
I want a MacBook Pro 15" matte screen. I have been waiting for a while, am tired of being tied down to a desktop machine. I want the ability to go mobile and work at different locations; like a park or a coffee shop. Being a Twitter Addict, it will be much easier to tweet from a MacBook Pro than an iPhone.
7. Rob Bowen | Fuel Your Creativity
My inner geek would love a Go Media Arsenal giftcard. Don’t care the amount, free vectors are the creative gift that keep on giving!
8. Nick La | Web Designer Wall
I’d like a Magic Mouse. Simply looks cool!
9. Jacob Cass | Just Creative Design
I think a family holiday is enough for me for Christmas, however, the inner geek does call. I’m currently selling my PC to move to NYC and will be buying a new computer, so a new 17" MacBookPro would be great, as well as an iPhone (yes, I’m finally going Mac). A renewed subscription to ComputerArts is also on the list.
10. Tom Ross | PSDFAN
For Christmas my inner geek would love a 12 months subscription to PSDTUTS. I’ve actually recently received a Macbook Pro, so in terms of larger things I’m pretty much set. I’d use the membership to really push my Photoshop skills.
11. Andrew Houle | My Ink Blog
As my wife will attest to, my Christmas list starts the day after the previous Christmas ends. It’s quite lengthy, but I think the gadget at the top of my list right now is a Time Capsule to help me be more consistent with my backups.
12. Nicholas Patten | Nicholas Patten
I want a G-Bound Remote Control Warterproof Car.
13. Chetan R | Cheth Studios
For christmas I would love some softwares which would let me design and code easily, which would remove the bugs in the code
.I know its not possible but the inner geek wants it.
14. Jon Phillips | Spyre Studios
My inner geek could definitely use a MyFonts or FontShop voucher. I recently fell in love with a couple of typefaces, and working on the redesign of my blog I have a feeling that could prove very useful. You can never have too many typefaces (provided they’re the right ones) at your disposal, right?
15. Richard Darrell | Minervity
The inner geek in me would like a tilt shift reality where things are miniature and scaled projects are simple to handle. ;
16. Fabio Sasso | Abduzeedo
I would love to get a new phone, but an android one, it could be either the htc hero or the motorola droid. I have been working a lot with my phone but the iphone’s lack of multitasking is really annoying.
17. Zack Dunn | Build Internet
I’ve gotten into podcasts a lot lately, and I think it would be neat to start one in the web design & development niche through Build Internet. If I had $500, I’d use that to get the startup equipment (e.g. mics, etc) to get a casual podcasting/screencasting operation up and running.
18. David Airey | David Airey
I’d like a Magic Mouse. Looks the part, and there’s no nipple to clog. What will I do with it? Book a long holiday in the sun, then play some online poker.
19. Martin LeBlanc | Iconfinder
I’m usually not the type that wants too much for Christmas, but now that you ask I do have one thing that I really want to get. I haven’t researched enough to know which one I want specifically but I know I want to get a tablet for my illustrations. I recently started messing around with Illustrator and vectoring simple characters, and I think having a tablet will help me explore new techniques and ideas. So yeah, Santa … hook me up!! LOL
A new iMac, I’m tempted by the 27" as I’m looking to upgrade my iMac of 2 years.
I know it isn’t too creative but I’d love to get my hands on the new 27 inch iMac. I have been using the same Windows based laptop for the last 4 years for all my computing needs. As fond as I have grown of my current computer I am due for an upgrade. I was playing around with the new iMac in the Apple store the other day and I could almost fit 3 full size web pages side by side. Definitely number one on my Christmas wish list!
Not really a tech geek. Being geeky for me is lusting after type and design books to add to my library. Maybe small LCD TV for my office.
My inner geek wants a Super Nintendo with Super Mario Allstars for Christmas. Then to spend all day playing it, not interacting with anyone else except during dinner – the way Christmas Days were meant to be spent
Throughout this year I’ve treated myself to a few personal gifts, such as my Mac and iPhone, so there’s not much in the way of tech that’s left on my wishlist! One thing I have on my wishlist for the year of 2010 is to take my motorcycle license and get myself a two-wheeled motorised beast. It’s probably a request from my inner Hell’s Angel as opposed to my inner geek, but it’s something I’m really looking forward to.
I’d like some great Design Books with cool images, illustrations, colors & typography! Don’t know if that counts as geeky!
I would love to get my hands on a magic mouse and a 1TB external HD
I would love a Canon 7D DSLR . Really love the "Live View" feature as well as ability to record HD Video. Combine that with the huge 3" LCD, 63zone metering &18Mp. Sweet!
My inner geek wants Canon EOS Rebel T1i Black SLR Digital Camera Kit w/ 18-55mm Lens w00t =)
For Christmas I’d want a long surge of creative and technical productivity. Also maybe a zombie apocalypse to bring the cost of living in Silicon Valley back down.
And last but not the least what oh what does my designer heart desire for Christmas? You know, I spent almost 2 hours compiling this post and putting in all the links and when it came to me. I was absolutely stumped! Then it dawned on me. I would simply like a new coffee mug [ I am sick of my year old one and I do love my coffee and get strangely attached to my mugs]. This time around a W2 Pantone Mug in Red 186C would wake me up nicely on Christmas morning and everyday thereafter! [I hope Nick reads this.]

I don’t drink coffee, but the Pantone mugs would be cool. There are many changes in my life I would love, but realistically I want a
Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch as well as one these cool
bamboo laptop stands. I think it looks nice, and it is enviromentally friendly.
i just want a tablet and an iphone, sweet..
This is a great list. It would definitely be hard to choose just one from that list. But for me personally, I think the iPhone would be the item of choice. And not just any iPhone because I have one of those but one that is unlocked so I can use it on the Canadian network I moved to.
Great job on this list.
Great post! I love those mugs!

Who is the last in the line for a MacBook Pro?
I have always been a PC guy. I wont a mac. Virus Free? WTFunk. I never got one for Xmas. Blah. Good post.
I’ll never forgive Santa for deserting me after I left home as a young man. For years I waited under a giftless Christmas Tree for Santa to show up. I never even got a piece of coal in my stocking, never got any gifts at all. Even after I had my own family, he never showed up. I would tell my kids how it used to be when I was a kid. They always listened with great envy and wished they could have grown up when I did. Well, maybe when my kids have family’s he will return. I’ll never know what I did that made him so mad that he would not even bring my kids presents. Whatever it was, maybe time will take care of the problem for the future generations. One of my grandkids might get a new Mac once our family name is forgiven.
