155+ Free Grungy And Beautiful Bokeh Textures

By Sneh Roy on Saturday, 26 September 200921 Comments

I was looking for some Bokeh textures recently to be used in a project and came across some beautiful free textures that I had to share. For those who don’t know what Bokeh is, it is originally "boke" and pronounced as bo as in "bore" and ke as in "Kennedy". Having originated in Japan, it loosely translates to "fuzzy" or maybe old people with cobwebs in their minds. It basically means the "out of focus" parts of a photograph. There have been a lot of discussions and controversies regarding the actual meaning of boke which was a source of much interest in the 90s. Mike Johnston, who was then the editor of Photo Techniques realized that people mispronounced it very easily and added an "h" to the word in the articles. And so "Bokeh" was born. It has definitely caught on and is a very sought after effect amongst photographers and designers who especially love the textured quality of the out of focus bits. Enjoy this lovely collection of over 155 amazing Bokeh textures, many original and many digitally altered to produce beautiful effects. Please read the artist’s terms of conditions and copyright advice before using them in your projects.

I’m amused at how an image that some people consider “throw aways”, are now celebrated as beauty and have a place in our visual world… I love these shots!

Next time your grandma (or similar) tells you that it’s a shame your photo isn’t in focus… ignore her and remember this post and how it could be useful!

This is definitely the new in thing to do on a website background. But, it’s everywhere now. Even new television shows and ads are using it.

I used a bokeh texture on my own site when I redeveloped it about 3 months ago but I feel it’s starting to look cheesy because it’s so over used.

Cool! These remind me of a photo I took of a Christmas Tree a couple weeks ago. Nice compilation. I didn’t know these were called “Bokeh Textures” : )
